Ephat Mujuru & The Spirit of the People - Mbavaira (1983)

Ephat Mujuru was a virtuoso on the mbira thumb piano central to Zimbabwean traditional music. Through a prolific career based in both Zimbabwe and the U. S., Mujuru had a tremendous impact through his recordings and many performances, as well as his extensive teaching of his art. Tragically he died unexpected ten years ago, at the young age of fifty-one.

This is one of several records cut by Ephat Mujuru in Zimbabwe during his tenure as a student in the U.S. in the '80s. It is incredibly short, containing four songs that could fit on one side of an LP, but it is a welcome uplifting listen for these tumultuous times. May it bring a bit of peace to you this weekend, wherever you are.

How can I be the first to thank you for such manna? Queued for download (after so much else you offer), so just in case you haven't found this, this is the only web recordings available from Jonah Sithole, the man who transposed mbira to electric guitar for Thomas Mapfump, played on most of his LPs too ... check this site in detail, a former Dutch World Service African music DJ who has a vast private collection given to him by the musicians ...

Apologies, rhythmconnection, just seen from wrldsrv that you are in touch recently so know of his contributions. Hope you don't mind the bombarding with links - just a sign of my huge pleasure at finding this new Zim trove, making sure you have these and wanting readers to be able to find more. Chibadura downloaded, next up on the amp, and Ephat Mujuru next on the downloads! Ta muchly mate, you've made my month! Dave Sez.

Like the other Dave, but a year later, I cannot believe no-one else has wanted to say thank you for this! And in 15 months?!!?! Still, don't be disheartened: there are still people like me waiting to find it! Mbira music is always pleasant, but it's a real treat when there's some depth to the music. Thanks for posting this LP - short but very sweet!!

Thanks for your kind comments, Dave. They make a difference. Yet the music itself is what inspires me, so I do not get too disheartened when hundreds of people read a post and download the music, and a percentage equal to the interest rates we get on our savings reply. Oh, your post is #500 on this site. Kind of a landmark, and I should probably reward you with something. But maybe just keeping the music rolling will be enough?

Cheers!
